MaybeDr. Dolittlewas right. I am a victim of this dreaded disease. I am finding myselfbeing pushedand pulledin all different directions in my life. how can this not effect mycreative process?

Creatingis a large part of my Life. Push and pull play a large part theretoo! I marvel at people who can close their eyes to the pushes andpulls of all thing around them. Yet I also know “pushing” it isthe only way to get things done.

PUSH!- I listen to professional artist who have to take jobs that aren'tappealing to them to pay the bills.

PULL!- They would love to work on their personal projects yet can'tbecause...

PUSH!-they have a partner, child, family who needs some of their attention.

PULL!- ifthey don't afford them this attention there will be problems...

There aremany more examples of “push and pull” and what may be apush! For you may be a pull! For me, but the point isthat they can all be distractions...

MyComics and Where I AM At?

I amhaving a tough time completing my comic strip and or book because Iam not sure about too many things.

I mean Iwant to publish it on the Web but I don't know if I can maintain aweekly update?

I amtrying to get a chapter or 8 pages ahead so i can have a buffer. Theproblem is I don't know if the story is interesting enough to hold MYinterest let alone the interest of the reader?

I have achapter written and a second chapter outlined. i also have a chapterwritten for my other comic idea hence the possibility of twodifferent stories a week!

I reallyliked the idea of Wednesday Comics published by DC Comics a couple of years ago. Yes. as strips go therewas some that didn't work but most did!

I thinkthis might be the Avenue for me as it would force me to be more clearand concise in my story telling.

I amstuck deciding on colouring too.

I do like colouring andthough I am just learning the art, I do enjoy it! Thiswould be digital colouring either done strictly in MangaStudio EX or combine between MangaStudio and and ArtRage Studio PRO...

Of coursethis adds to the time I spend on the comics. I don't know. I couldjust flat them and not add layered colouring...

Geez somany decisions and for me they can be creatively crippling.

I ambuoyed bu Jerzy Drozd of Comics are great! He says (paraphrase alert) “do your best andlet the reader sort em out!”

I think Ican! I know I will!

Sometimes when I draw I forget to just have fun or do it for myself. This was one of those times I decided to have some fun!

I have been reading "How to draw noir comics : the art and technique of visual storytelling" by Martinbrough, Shawn.

He mentions cropping and how it can increase dynamism in your panel/sketch and after inking this Minotaur character I was getting bogged down when (after cropping) I said to myself , "Self, this looks kinda cool" what if I also used the water colour brush in Artrage Studio (one of my very favourite colouring tools).

I am still happy with it 7 hours later... (an artist's litmus test)

Taking on Challenges

Running Up That Hill

I think it is good to take on a challenge once in a while, shake things up. Since this is mostly an art blog I will stick to that side of the fence (though you could apply this to anything)

Why should we take up a challenge? Well for one there is a theory (and this is a hell of a paraphrase) that says without challenges we stagnate and die (I told you it was a paraphrase!)

We need to push the boundaries so that we can grow!

Who Needs It?

We all do. Whether it is to do 30 characters in 30 days, 30 panels in 30 days, 24 hour comic day or nanowrimo - writing a book in 30 days. These are but a few, I'm sure there is many more.

Challenge Yourself!

They don't have to be sponsored by a website! I took up a personal sketch a day challenge back a couple months ago. I was good for the first 10 days or so but fell behind pretty quickly. I should have done quick 5 to 10 minute sketches (which was the point) but I found myself taking longer and doing more than what the original challenge was all about. This could be classified as - a pitfall.

Pitfalls, Missteps, Blunders

You have to be careful that you stick with the program/rules of the challenge and yes there is a reason challenges have rules (see above pitfall) but the idea is others have completed most of them before so it can be done but only if you stick "close to their rules...

This blog has also been a challenge. I tried to write weekly instead I wrote "weakly"!

Yes I misstep-ed and missed some weeks of writing but I tried to supplement by posting drawings and that didn't work for many of you. Many of you missed the journal-ling of our adventure in creating and I apologize as I have come to realize I am not that great of a troop leader!

I have difficulty keeping the "eye on the prize" and get easily sidetracked which leads to the blunders.

Learning to UN-learn

That's where challenges can come in handy. You do have to give up certain things when you take on a challenge. You give up some of your usual creative processes but sometimes they can be crutches. This scares some people. You can't be too particular or precious about your art in a challenge.

It is about experimentation and learning and for some that is tough. Especially if you are used to one way of doing something.

I believe that you need incentive but you also need to want to do it. There is no point in doing something you know you won't finish. So enjoy yourself. Remember, that is what we are here for.

You Only Need Five Minutes

300 Seconds and Counting...

I was checking Twitter today when my art friend @MarshallPlex tweeted he "would love to make art today...but I can't...maybe later." I replied that "all you need is 5 minutes." Then I thought about how much things do or don't get done in five minutes. Is five minutes enough time to create anything?

Of course it is!

When I was taking guitar lessons my teacher used to tell me to pick up my guitar every day. Even for 5 minutes. I would reply that "this isn't enough time to go through my lessons for the week (barely enough time to warm up and play a song). He'd answer "just grab the acoustic before bed when you are winding down (my wife doesn't allow the electric in the bedroom anyway, the amp is too loud!) What I think he was hoping was that after 5 minutes I'd probably play longer (and I usually did/do) and at minimum keep a routine and your fingers "warm". This works for drawing and writing too!

Location, Location, Location

On the small chance you literally don't feel like you have five minutes because of location (work) or time (work). What about a small moleskin to pull out on your break from work. I carry one in my satchel and pull it out for ideas and quick sketches (even when I am on the job) Now if I only remembered to bring the moleskin into the house from the car at the end of my shift. Sigh...

Remember, you can grab a pencil and scrap piece of paper and rough sketch anything. Same can be said for a colour marker or even a stylus on your puter. Let's hope your puter is already running cuz some puters bloated with start up software can take 5 minutes to get going (you hear me honey?)

Some other things that can be done in 5 minutes. Play with your pet, grab a cuppa (insert favourite beverage), close your eyes, sit back and relax, sing, play an instrument, dance, write a song, write some story ideas, some panel ideas, make a sandwich, call your partner, friend, family member and say you were thinking of them! Oh the list goes on...

Whatcha Readin?

Been reading "Northlanders" from DC/Vertigo fairly consistent tales from 1000 AD and the Saxon, Viking raids (also called the Viking age. Written by Brian Wood and illustrated by various artists the book tells short (one shot) and long form stories (up to 8 issues).

Though fictional I find the stories do resonate with my limited understanding of the period (couple of classes in University) You can jump on at any time but the stories are best enjoyed in the collected trades. I love the various artists they have used as I just am finishing the third trade. Wood also writes DMZ another recommended read. These books are recommended for 14 and older as the language, situations and art can be quite graphic!

Perspective

Last Long (lost) weekend Was (Canadian Thanksgiving).

You may have noticed less creating commentaries and that is because I am busy creating.

I came to a realization that though I do like writing about creating, I like to create cartoons and drawings more.

Panels and Perspectives

My ideas for comics are still there and now I need to put them down in comics and on pages. I have been posting panels of "Fear" a page I have been drawing this week. It is in constant flux and the story isn't set but I am using Manga Studio and trying to learn tools at the same time.

I am trying to learn perspective and panel creation and program commands so that is why I decided to make this blog irregular.

I tried to use the new format for blogger
but didn't like it in Firefox.

I am drawing more digitally but I am still rough sketching and scanning some stuff in.

What I am Reading

Batman and Robin: Reborn the first Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely Hardcover 2009/2010

I like Quitley's art stylized, unique and detailed. I will buy his books no matter who or what he draws... I am a Quitely fan and the covers and his art are the best thing about the Batman and Robin book The writing is pretty violent and when the new artist takes over I found it a struggle to get through. The next best thing about the book (after the Quitely art) is probably the writer/artist commentary regarding the covers and their designs in the extras portion at the back of the book. Worth a borrow or loan from your local library...

Finished Peter Bagge's political/social commentary "Everybody is Stupid Except For Me" collection of cartoons.

Bagge is Bagge and I love his satire and wit combined with his unique style of drawing. Definite commentary on Seattle/American living in first decade of the new millennium.

The Good Ole Hockey Game!

So this week was a great hockey week for my Summer Beer League. We made it to the finals in our Arena for the week but it ended on a sour note with a referee induced loss...Sigh...

What this meant was I was playing hockey 3 nights in a row and topping this off with a short work week and an extra busy day gig well my art challenges fell by the way side. You would note this by the lack of drawings appearing here and on my other sites. Sketch Daily turned into a sketch weekly. Just a reminder, the idea of sketch daily is to sketch something even if you only have 5 minutes and I did but I am loathe to put them up. I will though as like I said "even if you have 5 minutes."

So yes I will post the two things I was working on and try to make some more sketches to catch up. Either that or I will move sketch daily back 4 days... It is a personal challenge. So though I felt pressure I can't let it rule me. I have my sketchbook project on the go now though I haven't started and those may end up as scans in my sketch daily...

Other things. I was thinking of topics for days of they week that I don't have topics and two things I thought about were using the word a day from http://dictionary.reference.com/ or making the first letter of the day as a difficult perspective shot (or anatomy or subjects I have difficulty with) combined with the word from http://dictionary.reference.com/

For example:

Sunday = Spatial or Spacial,
Monday = Mundane or Mindset
Tuesday = Tuesday Sketch Group Topic
Wednesday = where (one is at)
Thursday = Top Down, twist
Friday = Frame of mind, facet, feature
Saturday = scene or size

Now these are just ideas. 365 days can be a long time of drawing and though you may like a wide open topic or content, sometimes we just work better within limits...

Strange, curious and strange but weirdly darkly delightful. Jason's art make the story surreal and less dark ...

The Boring Stuff...

Going through changes in the coming months at my day gig and there will be "spillage" into my art. No. Not in the actual subject matter (though subconsciously this could be possible)
And not for the better. More hours for less pay is never a good thing (unless it is art that you enjoy doing).

The Spin

I was wondering how I was to spin this into an art week blog? Initially while they try to get things "streamlined" there will be "more time" for some months until everything goes online in the Spring. So I have to get everything I ever wanted to do started in full and well along its way.

Prioritization

That will be key. We all do this even when we have more hours for art in our day. With less hours coming I am/was looking for shortcuts. I considered a paperless digital option like an Ipad or a Tablet/laptop but not loving drawing directly on screen I had to consider my options and in the end I chose the:

ASUS Slate EEE EP121

Technology

I picked up a ASUS slate (Tablet) this Summer (when I had money) after reading many reviews and having a hands on for a week or so and it is still a tough recommend.

Firstly 1) Tablets are NOT laptops. They perform some of the similar functions but don't go into the purchase thinking it will be your replacement computer. It is my portable sketchbook with a 64 gig SSD and a Wacom digitizer pen on a Windows 7 64 bit system...

Tom's Hardware did an excellent in depth review here.

I'll quickly go over my pros and cons below:

The good:

12.1 inch screen
Pressure sensitive pen
Portable/wireless
Artrage Studio software installed
The Bad:

Price 1300.00
Pressure Sensitive Pen (only 256 points of pressure)
Battery life 2 to 2.5 hours full Brightness mode (4.0 hours turned down)
64 GB SSD Drive

Conclusion:

If I had to buy it over I wouldn't. I wouldn't buy an Ipad either though. I like what the reviewer in the Tom's Hardware article said about the slate being 2 years behind the Ipad as Microsoft OS Tablets go (akin to the first Ipad). For an artist the lack of pressure sensitivity (256 pressure points) might be the deciding factor. For me as a sketch tablet it is great! For a pro as a inking tablet it is lacking...

Final thoughts:

If you are swimming in dough and need a tablet with a portable digitizer pressure sensitive pen then this is pretty much your only option right now.

In two or three years when ASUS goes another generation or two Digital artists will be wondering what they ever did without it?

What is Going On!?!

I am doing a sketch daily as you can see if you frequent anywhere Jahhdog/Michael Wawrow and some are being done on my Slate and some on my Wacom tablet. I am still learning the Artrage Studio software and am definitely working on my colouring.

Yes I am a Hellboy fan and this reminds me of early Hellboy. Creepy, interesting and dark. Great art and colours just add to this story. If you are a Mignola or Hellboy fan it is a worthwhile read.
